Dr. Brooke S. West Granted Tenure at Columbia University
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Brooke S. West has now successfully passed through all stages of review, including the University Trustees, and has been granted tenure at Columbia University. This is a tremendous milestone to Dr. West’s exceptional scholarship, impactful teaching, and meaningful contributions to both our School and University community.
As a medical sociologist, Dr. West focuses her research on the social, economic, physical, and policy determinants of health disparities among marginalized and criminalized populations both domestically and globally. Her work addresses critical areas including substance use, HIV/STI, reproductive health, and violence exposure. She is principal investigator on a NIDA-funded project exploring venue-based risk and social networks among substance-using women in Tijuana, Mexico blending place-based and network methodologies to inform safer, evidence-based interventions. Additionally, Dr. West has led research across the U.S., Kenya, South Africa, and Zambia focused on overdose prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and structural health interventions.
Dr. West is a faculty affiliate of the Social Intervention Group as well as on the steering committee for the Columbia Population Research Center. As we all know, she is a committed and effective leader, teacher, and mentor, working on some of the most pressing issues of our time. Her research is an asset to the well-being of all in our society, and her efforts advance CSSW’s mission in education and research.
I want to express my sincere thanks to the members of the CAA over the past year – Julien Teitler (chair), Nabila El-Bassel, and Brenda Jones Harden – as well as Vice Dean Ana Abraído-Lanza – for their efforts in supporting our remarkable faculty.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. West!
In community,
