Dean's Messages

Messages from the Dean

I write to you today during a most challenging time for our university, our city, our country, and our world. I write with an understanding that most of us are still processing all that has happened over the last few weeks, especially the arrests of CSSW and other students on our campus.

I am delighted to share the wonderful news that the President and CEO of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Dr. Halaevalu F. O. Vakalahi, will be Columbia School of Social Work’s 2024 commencement speaker.

It is an understatement to say that the past week has been incredibly tough here at Columbia. There is so much to process with the congressional hearing and the arrests of CSSW and other students on our campus.

I wanted to make sure that you saw the important email below from Interim Provost Dennis Mitchell regarding an awful incident that occurred last Friday on our Morningside Campus.

It is a tremendous pleasure for me to share the wonderful news that Dr. Courtney Cogburn has been selected to give the Aaron Rosen Lecture at the 2024 Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Annual Conference.

A student-led event within the School of Social Work building proceeded without permission, after being canceled.

We learned late last night of a flier and accompanying text being circulated about a December 6th event at the Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW).

For nearly two months, the world has been reeling from the events in Israel and Gaza.

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of Dr. Sheila H. (“Shelley”) Akabas, Professor Emerita of Social Work, this past month.

Some of the greatest strengths of the social work community are the values and ethics we uphold.

Today, October 9th, marks the annual celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

By now you have heard about the violence in Israel, which started with a surprise attack by Hamas. Israel has officially declared war and as of this morning, reports indicate that more than 700 Israelis have died, 100 Israelis are being held hostage, and more than 500 Palestinians have died.
