Julien O. Teitler

Dr. Teitler joined the faculty at Columbia School of Social Work in 2001. A sociologist and demographer, his research focuses on family structure, maternal and child health, and the social determinants of health. He also studies measurement and methodological issues related to studying hard-to-reach populations, poverty, and the social precursors of health outcomes. His work has been supported by the NIH, NSF, and various private foundations.

Dr. Teitler has held many administrative roles within the School including: senior associate dean for Academic Affairs and Research, chair of the tenure review advisory committee, and chair of the doctoral program. He was also the chair of Columbia University’s Morningside Institutional Review Board; co-director of the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars Program at Columbia University; and the co-director of the Columbia Population Research Center. Dr. Teitler is the recipient of the Columbia University Faculty Mentoring Award and Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Doctoral Student Mentoring Award.

Dr. Teitler holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin—Madison and an MA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
