When MSW students enter their field internships, they are immediately challenged with the need to bridge professional and personal identities, manage crises, emergencies, and ethical dilemmas, and work with clients and colleagues experiencing structural racism and oppression. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with Associate Professor of Professional Practice Yamile Martí (bio) and adjunct professor and 2016 alumna Anna Balakrishnan (bio) to talk about the rationale behind a new course they are piloting for first-year students. The course aims to provide tools they will need—professionalism, self-awareness, ethics, and an anti-oppressive framework—to handle the complex realities social workers face in their day-to-day interactions.
