Practicum FAQs
Frequently asked questions about social work practicum and requirements
The confirmation dates of practicum assignments will vary. Placements may be finalized in early spring or as late as mid-September for Specialized Year students. Generalist students are placed over the summer. It is not unusual for the process to extend into August and September.
The Office of Practicum Learning carefully reviews your Placement Form, resume, and any other relevant information you provide to select the placement that best matches your specialization area and field of practice. You will be assigned to an Associate Director of Practicum Learning, who will work with you to finalize your practicum assignment.
Your Generalist Year practicum will focus on developing direct practice skills such as engagement, contracting, assessment and termination, while tasks for specialized year students will vary depending on your year of study, specialization area, field of practice, type of agency, and population with whom you will be working. For information on possible assignments as well as the learning objectives for various specializations, read the Social Work Practicum Manual.
