2025 CSSW Graduation Student Speakers

Chelsea A. Allen, Doctoral Speaker

Chelsea A. Allen, PhD, is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Social Work and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Growing up as the daughter of a Black social worker in Charleston, South Carolina, the heart of the South, she developed an early understanding of how systemic oppression shapes mental health outcomes. Her scholarship bridges social work, psychology, and digital studies to examine how Black women use emerging technologies, such as social media and virtual reality, to support self-care, wellness, and collective healing. A key focus of her work is exploring how digital tools can be leveraged to provide culturally congruent care for historically marginalized communities. She’s also interested in how collective trauma, especially as it stems from structural oppression, continues to shape health and social outcomes in Black communities. Chelsea received her MSW and BSW from the University of South Carolina and will begin a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship at Rutgers University in the fall.

Nailah Joyner, Master's Speaker

Nailah Joyner is a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) candidate at Columbia School of Social Work, with a passion for criminal justice reform and social justice advocacy. A native of Memphis, TN, Nailah’s journey in social work has been shaped by her commitment to uplifting vulnerable populations facing mental health, substance use, and housing instability.

Throughout her studies, Nailah has worked with individuals navigating the criminal legal system, mental health challenges, and educational barriers. In addition to her academic and fieldwork achievements, Nailah served as President of the Student Union at CSSW, and has advocated for student needs and well-being, as a Student Life Graduate Assistant.

Nailah’s work is driven by a deep belief in systemic change and the power of advocacy. As MSSW Graduation Speaker, she is honored to share her journey and the lessons learned as she embarks on the next chapter of her career in social work.
