IMPACT OF OUR RESEARCH
Racism and Health
This past year, several of CSSW’s faculty members engaged in research focused on structural forms of racism and their relationship to health inequities. Associate Professor Heidi Allen, whose research advocates for a more robust health care safety net, published the findings of a study showing that Medicaid expansion could not only improve health outcomes but also provide low-income families with financial protection. Associate Professor Courtney Cogburn, whose work focuses on evaluating the effects of cultural racism on mental and physical health, contributed a journal article calling for a conversation about population health that shifts the focus away from individual patients in order to foster awareness of larger systems.
