Katherine (Kathy) Shear is the Marion E. Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry in Social Work and Director of the Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia School of Social Work and Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Kathy has been researching and developing a treatment for a condition known as complicated grief since 1996. Tens of millions of people around the world suffer from this condition. Kathy has developed a new treatment approach encouraging patients to re-live the loss and reflect on its meaning
Kathy recently completed a major study on complicated grief in elderly patients, which found that the new treatment approach is twice as successful as traditional depression therapy.
