FACULTY NEWS ROUNDUP, Fall 2012
Several members of the School of Social Work's full-time faculty have made noteworthy achievements this fall. We present three highlights:
The U.S. Census Bureau has named Irwin Garfinkel, the Mitchell I. Ginsberg Professor of Contemporary Urban Problems, as one of the inaugural members of the newly established National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations. The committee, which comprises 32 members from multiple disciplines, will advise the Census Bureau on topics such as housing, children, youth, poverty, privacy, race and ethnicity, as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other populations.
Assistant Professor Heidi Allen was invited to participate in briefings for the Senate and House of Representatives, which were organized by the Partnership for Medicaid on October 2, 2012. She reported on the outcomes from on the Oregon Health Study, the first randomized trial to examine the impacts of a health insurance expansion on uninsured adults. Allen was a co-investigator. She is also the co-author of a journal article reporting on the study’s findings that was published in the August 2012 Quarterly Journal of Economics.
During the Week of Science (November 5-18, 2012) at King Juan Carlos University in Madrid, Spain, Associate Professor Rogério Pinto was recognized for his contributions to the social sciences and the impact of his research in shaping implementation of HIV services in community settings. The Week of Science is a collaborative commemoration between Spain's Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports and prominent Madrid-based universities and researchers. Professor Pinto is currently engaged in a collaborative project in Madrid that compares HIV prevention providers’ use of evidence-based and ethical practices in both American and Spanish contexts.
