In Honor of Diversity Awareness Month

Dear CSSW Community,

For the last 19 years, April has been the month when we honor the diversity of our communities. It has become a time to celebrate the different cultures and experiences that make up who we are as a society in the hopes of having a deeper understanding, and appreciation, for what we all bring.

It’s important to state the obvious: celebrating diversity should be something that we innately do all the time. The truth is that we still need this month as a reminder, because of the ongoing danger that many face of being “othered” – especially at a time when principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are increasingly under attack. It’s a reminder that so many of those in our community are forced to hide who they are for fear of ridicule, ostracization, or physical harm. This month reminds us that the richness of our diversity is special and should be cherished.

Our community of social workers and advocates understands that celebrating diversity does not go far enough. Rather, we recognize that it is just one tool, in a box of many tools, needed to ensure that we contribute to creating a society where all can thrive. This month our Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be hosting several events to celebrate the diversity of our CSSW community. Details will be coming soon.
