Michael Zisser, recently retired as CEO of University Settlement and The Door after 28 years of service. During that period, the Settlement grew from an historically important Lower East Side organization to a major social services institution located in Manhattan and Brooklyn neighborhoods. The acquisition of The Door and the creation of Broome Street Academy (a charter high school for high at-risk youth) significantly expanded the program reach of the Settlement. He has been a Board member of many civic organizations and has been appointed to City and State commissions addressing significant urban issues.
Dr. Zisser is the author of several books and numerous reports on strategic planning, management and leadership, and community building. He received his doctorate in urban planning from the U of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor’s Degree in political philosophy from the University of Chicago. Prior to his work as a nonprofit manager, he served as departmental chair and associate professor at Pratt Institute’s graduate program in urban planning, and has taught management courses in several graduate programs.
