The ACA is the most significant piece of federal health policy in the last 50 years. Implementation of the ACA is transforming the healthcare landscape and will shape the field of medical social work for decades to come. Social workers in health care settings need a comprehensive understanding of what the law does in order to guide patients, engage in effective practice, and to advance the profession. As the ACA stages the future of healthcare in the United States, social workers must be poised to take advantage of opportunities to promote social justice and improve patient outcomes as part of the health care team.
This workshop, led by CSSW Assistant Professor Heidi Allen, will provide participants with a contextual and thorough understanding of major initiatives of the Affordable Care Act and the law’s potential impact on medical social work, now and in the future. We will discuss national and regional implementation of the law as well as contemporary issues and challenges. The goal of this workshop is to bring social work to the table in constructing the future of health care during this time of rapid evolution.
