In the first October episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with fellow CSSW faculty members Courtney Cogburn (bio) and Desmond Patton (bio) to discuss why social workers and social science researchers need to be at the table when planning applications of new media and technology. Cogburn and Patton will talk about their decision to design and offer a new minor in Emerging Technology, Media, and Society (EMS) to Columbia’s MSW students, providing tech courses, sector engagement, and research opportunities. Notably, both of these professors actively engage current students in their own studies: Cogburn in her virtual reality work to prevent racism and Patton in his data science-driven work on the use of social media by gang-involved youth.
