The United States has the worst maternal mortality rate in the developed world, with non-Hispanic Black women being the most affected—a statistic that says a lot about the socioeconomic and racial fault lines in the healthcare system. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with doctoral candidate Erica Eliason (bio) to talk about her recent study of the effect of health insurance eligibility on maternal, child, and reproductive outcomes. She found that a major part of the Affordable Care Act—the expansion of Medicaid—may be linked to lower rates of women dying in pregnancy, childbirth or within six weeks of delivery. Read more.
