A broad range of activists, organizers, practitioners, students, educators, faculty, impacted people and community members has been assembling at Columbia for nearly a decade for an annual “Beyond the Bars” conference, to grapple with strategies for challenging mass incarceration. Looking back over ten years: which themes have been most popular, what new lines of discussion have been generated, what strategies have been unearthed—and to what extent has this annual Columbia event shaped the wider debate on the American justice system? In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with Adjunct Professors Cameron Rassmussen (bio), and Cheryl Wilkins (bio) to assess the impact of this annual conversation. (The 10th “Beyond the Bars” will be held on March 5–8, 2020.)
