REMEMBER FREEDOM SUMMER: Voting Rights 2016
Location
Featuring Robert Moses | Rev. Calvin Butts | Karen Narasaki | Ester Fuchs | Irwin Garfinkel | Ronald Mincy
With generous funding from the Office of the Provost, Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) is proud to sponsor a tribute to former CSSW student Michael “Mickey” Schwerner and the 1964 Freedom Summer civil rights campaign. Schwerner, along with fellow civil rights activists James Earl Chaney and Andrew Goodman, was murdered in Mississippi that summer while working to register African Americans to vote.
In light of the upcoming presidential election, the recent controversial enactment of voter ID laws in several states, and highly-publicized instances of voter suppression, this event will highlight the important lessons of Freedom Summer and the pressing significance of voting rights today.
Free and open to the public; reservations required.
