Psychopharmacology and the Brain: Clinician Basics

October 6, 2018 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

About the Workshop
Psychopharmacology is full of intimidating concepts—neurotransmitter systems, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics of psychotropic medications—that are actually simple to learn and important for all social workers to understand. Drawing on his extensive training at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, psychiatrist Dr. Angel Caraballo (bio), leads a full-day workshop designed to equip social workers with tools for:

communicating with prescribing doctors and nurses,
understanding ethical and legal guidelines, and
advocating on behalf of clients seeking mental health treatments involving pharmacotherapies.
Participants will learn about the effects of commonly prescribed pharmacotherapies, practice applying a contemporary understanding of neurobiology to a treatment plan, and examine the cultural factors that inform diagnosis and psychopharmacological treatment.
