Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidenced-based intervention that draws on strategies from client-centered counseling, cognitive therapy, and a strengths perspective while focusing on building an intrinsic motivation for change through exploring and resolving ambivalence. MI has been applied to a wide range of populations and behavioral change areas, from smoking cessation to elderly care. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials.
