Our workshops focus on self-awareness, knowledge and skills needed to work with complicated grief, a debilitating bereavement-related condition diagnosed as an adjustment disorder in DSM-5. In this 1-day level 1 workshop we focus primarily on how to identify and evaluate people with CG, how to understand what they are experiencing and facilitate natural processes of adaptation to loss. We also introduce participants to the principles and procedures used in a proven efficacious approach to treatment. We include brief presentations with handouts, illustrative clinical stories, videos and experiential exercises.
Participants learn how to:
- Evaluate the concept of psychological immunity (i.e. natural adaptive process) as it relates to loss and grief
- Identify natural facilitators of adaptation
- Analyze characteristics of acute and integrated grief and consider how they are related to each other
- Identify impediments (i.e.”grief complications”) of adaptation
- Conduct an assessment to determine if a client is suffering from CG
- Recognize similarities and differences between CG, PTSD and MDD
- Evaluate the approach used in CGT to resolve complications and facilitate the natural adaptive process
6.5 contact hours are available for NYS Licensed Social Workers
