While New York City remains at the height of the overdose crisis and continues to face the devastating impact of the racist “war on drugs,” harm reduction peer outreach workers routinely provide lifesaving services to people who use drugs and their communities. How can policymakers, researchers, and agency leaders support harm reduction labor rights for the people on the front lines of this crisis?
Please join us on May 1, 2023—International Workers Day—for a film screening, panel discussion, and photo exhibit to showcase Labor of Love: Experiences of Harm Reduction Workers Using Photovoice. Grounded in a collaboration between members of the Peer Network of New York (PNNY) and doctoral students from the Social Intervention Group, the event will feature findings from a photovoice research project that utilized photography and narrative to highlight the needs and assets of peer outreach workers in the South Bronx. Guided by the “nothing about us, without us” ideology, we demonstrate how participatory action research can support the harm reduction movement.
In advance of the event, please review the short-form version of the PNNY advocacy video, the donation page that directly benefits the PNNY, and the Equity and Inclusivity Report for NYC Peer Workers the organization developed.
