Why is DBT Called the breakthrough therapy of the 21st century? DBT provides a compellingly novel approach for several unique inclusions, but enhancing skills to manage the difficult emotions and behaviors which threaten therapy for client and therapist alike are among its most pivotal goals. This workshop includes the most up-to-date iteration of DBT, including the four modules four modules of Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation and Distress Tolerance and the newest, “Walking the Middle Path”.
Workshop Description
This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the history, theory and practice of DBT. In addition, essential skills from the modules of Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance and Walking the Middle Path will be presented, demonstrated and discussed through presentations, video, and case exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to practice essential skills within these modules.
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn to:
- Identify clients for whom DBT skills may enhance treatment.
- Describe three skills from each of the four DBT modules of Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation and Distress Tolerance.
- Describe the purpose and utility of a DBT diary card.
- Identify the enhancements that DBT offers from its theoretical CBT base.
Presenter
Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, LCSW is an award winning therapist, author, and nationally recognized mental health expert. Ms. Stone has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Silver School of Social Work, New York University for nearly a decade where she presents DBT, CBT and IPT to graduate students, in the Post Master’s Certificate Program and for the Office of Global and Lifelong Learning. She was a public reviewer for the National Institute of Mental Health.
Ms. Stone contributed a chapter on Dialectical Behavior Therapy in the groundbreaking text Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Clinical Social Work Practice, (Ronen & Freeman, Springer, 2006); the first to include DBT among its discussion of CBT approaches. She was a member of the DBT treatment team at Hackensack University Medical Center, all of whom were intensively trained by Linehan in 2001. Ms. Stone completed her Advanced Intensive DBT training with Marsha Linehan in NYC in 2013.
Stone regularly presents on evidenced based mental health approaches, including DBT, at educational conferences, and in the media; national television appearances have included the CBS Early Show, ABC News, NJN News, NBC News, The Morning Show – FOX. She was a major force in the passage of federal mental health legislation which was included in The Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act. Ms. Stone maintains a private practice in Englewood Cliffs, NJ utilizing evidenced based therapies for a spectrum of affective disturbances and life events.
