Sad news for our community

Dear CSSW Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that we write to you today to inform you that Alivia Curl, LCSW, CSSW Class of 2016, died this past weekend in a hit-and-run accident in Rochester, NY. We are all devastated to hear the news and send our deepest condolences to Alivia’s loved ones.

While neither of us had the pleasure of knowing Alivia, we can still feel the impact she had on our community by the way in which faculty, staff and former classmates have spoken about her. One of her classmates, Shuronia, describes her like this:

Alivia was on the Advanced Clinical Practice Track and on the E-Board of Black Caucus. After CSSW she continued on with STEPS to End Family Violence where she was recently promoted to Co-Director of their Acute Community Based Services program. CSSW birthed her New York family and community and family as it was the foundation of the bonds she created here in NYC. CSSW also shaped her career trajectory. In addition she was a private psychotherapist at private practices, one of which is a group practice with CSSW alums and owned by a CSSW Alum, Sydnee Corriders. Anyone who knew Alivia can definitely speak to her light, her laughter and her good heart.

It is clear that Alivia had a passion for people, and this passion guided her pursuits to support individuals and communities to thrive. Her contributions to making our world better will live on.

A “go-fund-me” page has been created in honor of Alivia. We have included the link here for those who are interested in giving.

As our community mourns, let us honor and celebrate the ways in which Alivia touched so many lives around her. She will be deeply missed.

With sincere condolences,
