Monique Jethwani-Keyser joined the full-time faculty in Fall 2012. Prior to this, she was a postdoctoral research scientist at CUSSW’s Center for Research on Fathers, Children, and Family Well Being.
Jethwani-Keyser has a wealth of experience in the fields of developmental research, program development, and direct services for youth. For several years she was Director of the Safe Harbor programs at Safe Horizon, where she developed curricula and managed the operation of this school-based victim assistance/ violence prevention program in five New York City public schools.
She has worked in many other arenas including the New York District Attorney’s Office, St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, and the Psychiatric Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. She has provided consulting services that include training, curriculum development and program planning for organizations such as The Children’s Aid Society, The After-School Corporation, Educators for Social Responsibility, and the Partnership for After-School Education.
“I am deeply interested in program development and educational reform,” Dr. Jethwanit Keyser says, “particularly in influences of school climate on social-emotional development. But I don’t want to limit my studies to the United States alone.”
Dr. Jethwani-Keyser has also worked with schools and youth organizations in India, Bermuda and the Virgin Islands in conducting quantitative and qualitative research and evaluation studies, and consequently identifying best practices. She has presented at numerous national conferences and trainings on a variety of topics associated with educational reform and child development. Her mixed methods doctoral dissertation from NYU, entitled “When Teachers Treat Me Well, I Think I Belong: School Belonging and the Psychological and Academic Well Being of Adolescent Girls in India” earned her the NYU Steinhardt award for outstanding research contribution.
Dr. Jethwani-Keyser has previously taught Human Behavior/ Social Environment as an adjunct at CUSSW.

- Involvement of students in the reform of the educational institutions and policies that aim to serve them.
- A qualitative study in Bermuda exploring the educational and professional aspirations of Black Bermudian male high school students and young Black Bermudian men. She has made policy recommendations to the Premier of Bermuda.
- A book that qualitatively examines the usage and impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit among Non Custodial fathers in New York and the role of non custodial fathers in their children’s educational and developmental outcomes.
