Dr. McNeil serves as the Director of Research and Policy at the Homelessness Outreach and Prevention Project at Urban Justice Center. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from Western Michigan University, and her B.A. in sociology from Indiana University, South Bend. Prior to her current position, Dr. McNeil served as an assistant professor of sociology at Long Island University, C.W. Post. She has taught courses in gender, social problems, family, research methods, and statistics. Dr. McNeil’s research has centered on issues such as welfare reform, public housing, and childcare. Her latest work, Street Practice: Changing the Lens on Poverty and Public Assistance (2012) is a case study of how New York City nonprofit organizations successfully combine empirical research and policy advocacy to affect social change for impoverished populations.
