David Shichman is a graduate from SUNY Purchase College (B.A., Psychology); The Columbia University School of Social Work (Concentration: Policy Practice) and currently holds the position of Director of Resources, Advocacy & Homelessness Prevention at New Alternatives For Children, a New York City Child Welfare agency working with special needs children and their families. David has worked extensively on policy issues related to benefits & entitlement programs including HRA services, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, as well as extensive work on Homelessness Prevention. His 9 years at New Alternatives for Children has allowed him to focus on both the macro and micro level of practice; advocating for change directly with city council members and directors of city agencies, as well as assisting NAC clients’ in-person at HRA centers, SSI offices, Fair Hearings, NYCHA appeals and many other city offices. Additional responsibilities at NAC include managing the Food Pantry, Coordinating Camp Placements for NAC clients, and being a Family Team Conference Facilitator in NAC’s Foster Care department. David is passionate about the field of social work and is proud to return to his alma mater as an adjunct faculty member. In his personal time, Dave writes & performs music; travels as much as possible and reads!
