One year ago, New York City became the epicenter of the coronavirus in the United States, and the city had to work collaboratively to overcome the challenges faced by its residents, particularly in its poorest neighborhoods, which were disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Now, a year later, the city is continuing to roll out the vaccine—and working diligently to ensure it’s done in an equitable manner. Kimberly Jocelyn (bio), who received her MSW and MPH degrees from Columbia in 2019, has been involved in all aspects of the city’s response in her capacity as a project manager for NYC Health and Hospitals. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with Jocelyn to discuss her work—from contact tracing to testing to now supporting the city’s outreach to community-based organizations that are working to increase vaccine access. As Jocelyn told CSSW News, the arrival of the pandemic has motivated her to “help people affected by the social, biological, and environmental determinants of health and mental health, such as institutional and structural racism and rooted health inequities.”
