Principles of Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy may be particularly applicable when treating patients who continue to grieve over an extended period of time without relief. Drawing on a case study of a homicide-bereaved mother “stuck” in a pattern of paralyzing rumination and isolative avoidance for almost 10 years after her son’s murder, the presenter shows how techniques of imaginal revisiting and situational revisiting can be skillfully employed to re-mobilize her coping and begin to reverse nearly a decade of “not living anymore.” Outcome indicators from the patient’s own behavioral repertoire, as related to the clinician, validate the results of the intervention and demonstrate the extent of her recovery.
