This research presentation will explore the integration of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) in understanding the lived experiences of survivors of community-based gun violence and their family members. Particular emphasis will be paid to the collaborative process undertaken with the Kings Against Violence Initiative, a Brooklyn-based hospital violence prevention organization. Qualitative interviews with 23 participants from Brooklyn, including 11 gunshot survivors and 12 family members were conducted, to investigate the continuous traumatic stress that shapes survivors' and family members lives and induces shifts within family systems. The presentation will highlight the importance of CBPR for engaging hard-to-reach populations who are often absent from academic literature.
Speakers will discuss the reciprocal benefits of this collaboration for advancing research and creating community impact. The presentation will also provide attendees with a CBPR conceptual framework that can help inform their approach to research collaboration. Moreover, the conceptual framework will emphasize the importance of forming strategic alliances, offering methodological reflections and reinforcing the CBPR principles of mutual respect, relevance, and empowerment in academic inquiry.
