How has the legacy of slavery continued to shape everyday life in the United States? For the 2022 Lucille N. Austin Lecture, Dr. Clint Smith (bio) will discuss his research on this question, which culminated in a #1 New York Times bestseller, How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America (Little, Brown, 2021). His work takes the reader from New Orleans to downtown Manhattan to reveal the imprints of this legacy hiding in plain sight.

The Lucille N. Austin Lecture was established to honor the contributions of Lucille N. Austin, an esteemed member of the Columbia School of Social Work’s faculty for more than 30 years. The program has been made possible, in part, by a generous contribution in memory of Jane R. Heimerdinger and a grant by the Kenworthy-Swift Foundation.
