About the Event
Participatory research approaches, such as community-based participatory research (CBPR) and youth-led participatory action research (YPAR), have been lauded as a mechanism for advancing health equity. Key tenets of participatory approaches include justice, equity, and empowerment; they recognize that community members, including youth, can be experts, innovators, and leaders in the creation of knowledge and sustainable interventions reflective of community priorities. For the Dean’s Lecture on Inequality and Opportunity, Dr. Linda Sprague Martinez (bio) will discuss structural racism as a barrier to participatory research approaches and will offer strategies for creating systems change in academic institutions to facilitate CBPR.. The event will be moderated by Dr. Rob Eschmann (bio), Associate Professor at Columbia School of Social Work.

Columbia School of Social Work is pleased to announce the Dean’s Lecture Series on Inequality and Opportunity. The lecture series features prominent scholars who will address the complex system of racist and oppressive policies and practices that result in inequities, including a focus on disparities in health, education, economic opportunity, and employment outcomes.
