About the Event
Hong Kong’s population is rapidly aging. By 2064, around one third of its residents will be 65 or older; one tenth, 85 or older. In preparation for this demographic shift, the government has established the policy of “Ageing in Place” with the aim of curbing premature institutionalization and promoting active aging. Less attention, however, has been paid to the needs of family caregivers. At this China Center lecture, Vivian Lou (bio), one of China’s foremost experts on family caregiving, active aging, and their health impacts, will share her research on how to promote a more responsive and supportive environment for caregivers, including the development of mobile apps for volunteers, social workers, and families. This lecture is part of the 2020–2021 annual lecture series on “Chinese Social Policy from Comparative Perspectives” cosponsored by the Columbia China Center for Social Policy and Weatherhead East Asian Institute and supported by the Columbia School of Social Work.
