In this Critical Media + Digital Studies Workshop, Jeffrey Lane (bio), an urban ethnographer at Rutgers University, talks to Professor Desmond Patton (bio) about his new book, The Digital Street (Oxford University Press), which marks the first in-depth exploration of the ways social media is changing neighborhood life in poor, minority communities. Based on five years of ethnographic observations, Lane illustrates the online and offline experiences of black teenagers in the shadow of the Harlem Children’s Zone and sweeping gentrification, at a time when social media came to permeate all facets of life.
