Heroic Efforts at the Border: Advocacy and Care for Traumatized Immigrant Children
Alan Shapiro (bio), M.D.
A trained pediatrician, Dr. Alan Schapiro is co-founder and medical director of Terra Firma, a nationally recognized medical-legal partnership based in New York City that provides medical and mental health services for immigrant children and advocates for their rights. He has been active in endorsing the humane treatment of all immigrant children seeking safe haven in the United States.
Dr. Shapiro’s keynote will be followed by a panel discussion with:

About the Event
Immigrant children seeking safe haven in the United States, whether arriving unaccompanied or in family units, face a complicated evaluation and legal process from point of arrival through their permanent resettlement in communities. 2019 Austin Lecturer Dr. Alan Shapiro will address the steps being taken by pediatricians, social workers, and other social-service and health-care professionals to ensure that these children receive the care they need, including treatment to mitigate any harm or traumatization from being separated from their families and detained within the Department of Homeland Security’s facilities.
Dr. Shapiro’s lecture will be followed by a panel discussion involving Terra Firma psychotherapist Lisa Pineda, with direct experience of working with immigrant children who have been separated from their families at the border; and two members of the Columbia School of Social Work community: Professor Neeraj Kaushal, author of Blaming Immigrants, a new book on U.S. immigration policy; and Bethany Miller, an MSW student who spent her winter break helping Central American migrants in Tijuana, Mexico.
