China’s wealth distribution has been widening since the beginning of the 21st century, and it has also seen a rise in income inequality in the first three decades of its economic transition. Less clear, however, is whether this trend has continued during the fourth decade. Using the 2002, 2013, and 2018 waves of data from the China Household Income Project (CHIP), Li Shi (bio), an expert on income distribution, poverty and rural migration in China, will analyze China’s current income and wealth inequality trends and their causes. Commenting on his lecture will be Carl Riskin (bio), whose primary research is concerned with human development and who has written extensively on inequality and poverty in China. Qin Gao (bio) will moderate the discussion.
