NEVER TOO EARLY, OFTEN TOO LATE: Overcoming Patient, Family, and Provider Resistance to Advance Care Planning

October 24, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

At the end of life, many patients unwittingly undergo more invasive and expensive treatment than they want, while others fail to get all the aggressive treatments they prefer.  Both are clear violations of patients’ right to self-determination and result in untold suffering and out-of-control expense for patients and their loved ones.  The good news is that patients who complete the necessary documents are far more likely to get the type of end-of-life care they want. In this presentation Dr. Stuart will document the need for advance care planning. He will explain and illustrate the elements of effective three-part living wills and MOLSTs, and demonstrate an effective process to overcome patients’ surrogates’, and providers’ resistance to advance care planning.

Dr. Stuart has been a member of hospital ethics committees for over 50 years, has helped hundreds of patients successfully orchestrate their end-of-life care, and is the author of more than 100 publications including www.6stepslivingwill.org.
