Demonstrate Your Impact: Introduction to Program Evaluation

Increasingly, the funding community (private and government) is requiring more information about evaluation measures from their grantees. Incorporating evaluation into programs demonstrates impact and can optimize operations. Therefore, program evaluation is an indispensable skill for administration in nonprofit organizations.

Workshop Description

Through lecture, case studies, simulation and small group work, participants will become familiar with program evaluation, key terms involved, and different types of evaluations. They will learn how to create and interpret logic models to develop evaluation measures for their programs. Participants will work in small groups on logical models, which will then be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn to:

  • Define the terms of program evaluation
  • Identify the types of program evaluation
  • Differentiate between outputs and outcomes
  • Draft a logic model
  • Interpret a logic model

Presenter:

Angelie Singla, LMSW, is an alumna of CSSW and has successfully taught courses and workshops for CSSW, the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, and Network for Social Work Management (NSWM). At Silberman, she taught in their post-master’s program, Proposal Writing & Grant Management and Program Evaluation. For NSWM, she has facilitated sessions for their national conference as well as the NYC Chapter’s conference. Most recently, she taught Orientation to Grant Writing: Developing a Persuasive Needs Statement at CSSW. In addition to her classroom teaching, she is a field instructor for CSSW and Silberman students.

Singla’s teaching is complemented by her professional experience. She has successfully submitted and administered grants from the private and government sector for public health, education, and youth programs ranging in size from $40K to $15.5M. She is currently Director, Corporate, Foundation & Government Relations at South Nassau Communities Hospital. Previously she was the Vice President of Philanthropy at Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City and prior to that the Assistant Director of Program and Resource Development at the Fund for Public Health in New York. She is the Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee of the New York City Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Continuing Education Contact Hours Information

6.5 contact hours will be awarded for NYS, NJ and CT licensed social workers. Licensed Social Workers for other states, please refer to your state licensing agency and email swope@columbia.edu. In order to receive your continuing education certificate, you must attend the entire workshop. Certificates will be emailed within 30 days of the workshop. CSSW is an approved NYSED provider for continuing education contact hours and a CSWE accredited institution.
