FAQ for Incoming Advanced Standing Students

Welcome to CSSW! If you haven’t already, we urge you to fill out this form by Monday, July 20, so that we can send you an official welcome package by mail. Meantime, we recommend that you read the following FAQ covering Orientation, registration, and future communications.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

All Orientation sessions will be held virtually. Attendance is mandatory. Live sessions will take place on Monday, July 27, and Thursday, July 29. (See schedule question below.) Access to the sessions will be through a Canvas course site. Each student will receive access, with links to both pre-recorded and the live sessions. We ask that you use a webcam during the live sessions.

On Monday, July 27, you will be required to attend Orientation beginning at 9:30 a.m. EDT and concluding by 4:30 p.m. EDT. You will also be invited to attend a virtual welcome reception immediately following the general session. On the second day of orientation, Thursday, July 30, you will be offered a combination of required and optional sessions. The first required session will take place at 9:30 a.m. EDT; and the last required session will end at 2:30 p.m. EST. Optional programming will continue until 4:30 p.m. EDT. More information on the schedule will be sent via email in the near future.

All students must select ONE of the options below, and attend BOTH days:

  • Option 1: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. EDT; Tuesday & Thursday, July 21 & 23, 2020
  • Option 2: 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. EDT; Tuesday & Thursday, July 21 & 23, 2020

NOTE: Please complete this form to confirm which PDSA sessions you will be able to attend. DEADLINE: Wednesday, July 15 @ 11:59 p.m. EDT.

REGISTERING FOR CLASSES AND FULFILLING THE STATISTICS REQUIREMENT

Courses begin the week of July 27 and run for five weeks, ending the week of August 24. All Students MUST register for one (1) section of each of two courses, for a total of six credits:

  • T6012 Field Education Seminar
  • T7105 Advanced Standing Integrative Seminar

The course schedule is as follows:

COURSE #1: T6012 Field Education Seminar

  • T6012:001 (Call# 11110) – Tuesday & Wednesday, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. (EST)
  • T6012:D03 (Call# 14304) – Tuesday & Wednesday, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. (EST)
  • T6012:D04 (Call# 11113) – Friday, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. (EST); Instructor: Analeah Green

COURSE #2: T7105 Advanced Standing Integrative Seminar

  • T7105:D03 (Call# 11114) – Tuesday & Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00p.m. (EST)
  • T7105:D03 (Call# 14305) – Tuesday & Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00p.m. (EST)
  • T7105:D04 (Call# 11117) – Friday & Saturday, 12:00 – 2:00p.m. (EST)

Advanced Standing students must complete the CSSW Statistics requirement prior to the start of the fall term. If you have not been granted a waiver, you must also register to take 6505 Introduction to Statistics during the summer term. (Please review slides 20 – 22 in the Registration Document for more information regarding the Statistics requirement).

Registration for the fall 2020 term is now open, from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, and will continue until Friday, July, 31 (excluding the holidays and weekends). This period should be utilized by all students who wish to make changes to their schedule (space permitting).

Students seeking reasonable accommodations or support services from Disability Services (DS) are required to register with the office. Please note that services received in high school or at other universities do not automatically transfer to Columbia University.

COMMUNICATIONS FROM CSSW AND COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

The primary method of contact with students, whether from the School of Social Work or Columbia University, is via email. We strongly encourage you to check your Columbia email regularly.

Beginning Monday, July 27, our office will no longer send communications to your personal email address. All emails will be sent only to your Columbia email address. Instructions for activation and forwarding can be found HERE.
